In Virginia Beach and across the nation, fewer patients opt for surgical face lifts and are turning to dermal fillers, Botox and fat grafting to maintain the appearance of youth, to improve facial wrinkles and to treat facial imperfections and scars.
These treatments can provide safe, beautiful results.
At Galumbeck Plastic Surgery, Matthew Galumbeck, MD - whose expert knowledge of facial neuro-muscular structure is supported by aesthetic judgment gained from 14 years of surgery - is the only one who will administer injectables. He uses only FDA approved injectables that meet his own high standards for results and safety.
The new generation of injectables continues the advance towards safer, longer lasting, and less expensive options to repair skin damage and the effects of time, sun and environment.
BOTOX®
A purified protein used to temporarily relax muscles that can cause lines to form. Botox is classified as a denervating agent. When expertly applied, it paralyzes the the nerves, thus smoothing and relaxing the lines and wrinkles caused by dynamic facial muscle movement.
Botox is most often used for cosmetic purposes to correct the vertical brow crease above the bridge of the nose, and to relax the tension that holds crow's feet.
Best results from a Botox injection are seen within 2-3 days of the injection, and these results gradually diminish until a new treatment is needed in 3-6 months.
Botox works well with other injectables; for instance, when applied correctly to areas that have been injected with dermal fillers, Botox calms dynamic muscle action, slowing the rate of absorption of the filler and extending the filler's effects.

Radiesse®
FDA approved, Radiesse is a biocompatible (no allergy testing, naturally absorbed by the body) "next generation" non-permanent filler used to correct facial lines and wrinkles. It is not a hyaluronic acid like other fillers currently in use. According to the maker, it is made of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. Radiesse has been approved specifically for correction of the Nasolabial fold (smile line) that becomes more pronounced with age. It is also used as a facial filler to combat facial wasting associated with long-term HIV survivors.
Radiesse fills the sub-dermal creases and stimulates production of collagen to encourage tissue regeneration. Radiess claims to do more than just "temporarily fill-in facial lines and wrinkles." Results are immediate and, according to Radiesse, last longer than previously available fillers.
Restylane
Restylane is a hyaluronic filler, and like other Hyaluronic acid fillers, it is a synthetic, bio-engineered (not made from human or animal tissue or product) acid based on a naturally occuring acid thatare taking the place of Collagen as a way to restore youthful contours and fullness to facial features. No pre-screening is required to assess allergic reaction. Restylane is naturally hypoallergenic.
Precise application of this medication by Dr. Galumbeck takes only a few minutes to perform.
There is no pre-screening, no recovery time, and patients are able to go back to work and social activities immediately. Results will last an average of six months, but some patients report improvements lasting for a year or longer.
